Chicken Coop
Our largest reusable project is our chicken coop.
Believe it or not this used to be our kids swing set and club house.
The wire is new, as is the largest piece of plywood along the back in the top picture.
Paint is new (I got a lot of odd looks in the paint department of Home Depot when getting my bright red paint). The blocks at the base we had laying around the yard. The Plexiglas in the windows has been in my garage for almost 20 years waiting for just the right application. Last year my 8 year old wanted chickens. I did not. I told him that the clubhouse and swingset that the kids had stopped using needed to come out to make room. They took out the clubhouse.
This spring when the feed store got chicks the chicken idea came back. I told them that the swing set needed to go also (we needed the room as well as the wood). Everyone wanted chickens (except for me) and the swing set came down.
All good looking wood was saved. All nails and screws removed. The rotten stuff went to our camping wood pile and was taken and used for our camping fires last summer. Then we got the chicks, thinking that we could build the coop while they were little and in our house.
Those little chicks grew really fast and we worked HARD for 4 weeks getting the coop ready for them. At just over 4 weeks they moved into their new house. It’s been fun. One out of the six turned out to be a rooster. Fortunately we found a good home for him that did not involve a freezer.
Our plants are now enjoying the free fertilizer that the chickens are providing.
