Chicks at four weeks
The chicks hit four weeks old. They have been in the outdoor coop for a week and a half now and I like it a whole lot better than having them inside. The little henhouse that I made is insulated and I have one of those reptile heat lamps with the adjustable dial on the cord out there. I had bought one of the infared light bulbs for the lamp, but it only lasted 10 days before it burned out. It cost way too much for that and I took it back (Petsmart gave me store credit) and got a 100 watt red colored outdoor flood light. So far it has lasted longer than the $15 reptile light. I like that adjustable lamp in a small space. I can’t raise the lamp much in the kennel brooder that they were in or in the little henhouse so the adjustable (dimmer) thing is great.
All of these (hopefully) girls are sexed pullets from Meyer Hatchery. I used their small order program with the totally expensive express shipping so that I could get the breeds that I wanted. so hopefully they will all be girls. All the chicks that I ordered made it - they got here about 40 hours after they were shipped (from Ohio to small town California). It was a little nerve wracking to have them shipped here. But they are all doing really well.
